About Skipedia
The story of Skipedia began not with a website, but with a travel agency.
From beaches to mountains
Our team originally specialised mostly in beach holidays. Over time, though, we noticed that more and more clients were asking about ski trips: they wanted a resort with the right kind of pistes, compared altitudes and the size of ski areas, and asked about snow quality, lifts, lift pass prices and where the hotels were.
Demand for this direction grew so fast that we decided to give ski trips their own office and their own team of specialists.
A body of knowledge of our own
Working with skiers and snowboarders, we gradually built up our own body of knowledge about resorts. Our staff needed to grasp quickly how dozens of Alpine resorts differ from one another: where beginners are better off, where experienced skiers should go, where good snow is more likely, and how well the price of a trip matches what the ski area actually offers.
In time there was far more of this than an ordinary internal agency database could hold. That is where the idea of Skipedia came from - a separate project in which data about ski resorts could be organised and made available to every traveller.
Skipedia today
Today Skipedia is an atlas of the world’s ski resorts. We collect information on pistes and vertical drops, lifts, lift pass prices, the length of the season, trail maps, webcams, accommodation and the other details that make resorts comparable.
Our aim is simple: to help a traveller work out where it is genuinely worth going to ski, before the tickets are bought and the hotel is booked.
We keep adding to the database, checking what is in it, and developing Skipedia as a practical reference for people who love mountains, skiing and travel.
