Hemavan stands in Swedish Lapland, twenty kilometres from the Norwegian border among the empty fells of the Vindelfjällen reserve, one of the largest in Europe. The runs lie both above and below the tree line, and the season stretches from November to May. The lift pass is shared with neighbouring Tärnaby, home of Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Pärson. One local curiosity is the airport of its own: seven hundred metres from the terminal to the lift, close enough to walk in ski boots.

Snow and off-piste are the strong points: the resort is rated among the most snow-sure in Sweden, and Kobåset is singled out as the freeride zone to head for. The forested terrain saves the day in wind and flat light when the open mountain is unskiable. The village is small, so lift queues barely exist. Grooming, the children's areas and the parks get good marks, and heli-skiing, snowmobiling, cross-country trails and dog sledding are all on hand.
Price is the sorest point - Hemavan is called one of the most expensive resorts in the country and, by many accounts, not worth it. Slow lifts come up again and again: there are no chairlifts here, only drags. Wind spoils a lot, too. When it blows hard the central lift shuts, and there is no way to reach the other sectors because no ski bus runs between them. Advanced terrain is thin for a week, the runs repeat, and après-ski is modest.
