Hlíðarfjall - Akureyri

At Hlíðarfjall, a true skiing paradise is right on the doorstep. There are excellent conditions for skiing and snowboarding. The lifts can transport a total of 4,920 people per hour. However, the continuous vertical drop of the ski slopes is around 500 m.

The ski resorts were built between 1955 and 1964, but operations began in 1962. The Icelandic Winter Sports Centre operates at Hlíðarfjall, but was established in Akureyri with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the City of Akureyri, the Icelandic Sports and Olympic Association and the Akureyri Sports Association on 18 March 1998.

“The Icelandic Winter Sports Centre, VMÍ, is a service organisation whose main task is to promote winter sports, sports education and outdoor activities, thereby contributing to a healthy lifestyle and health among the population.

Many permanent employees work at Hlíðarfjall year-round. In summer, the ski area is maintained and developed, while in winter the staff increases several times over to provide guests with fast, high-quality service.
