Hlíðarfjall rises above Akureyri, the largest town in northern Iceland, with the whole of Eyjafjörður in view from the pistes. The area is low and small, but its northern position gives it dry, good-quality snow, and the season holds from December into early May. Eight lifts serve terrain at every level, and there is no forest at all. The surrounding Tröllaskagi peninsula has long been known for ski touring and heliskiing: you can start climbing from the ocean's edge.

What visitors say about the resort
The views come first in the reviews: the town and the fjord lie below the pistes, and seeing the sea from a ski slope is rare in Europe, with the panorama from the upper restaurant singled out. The hill is rated a good fit for beginners and steady intermediates, and its children's area and ski school are called the best in the country - the nursery slope is free and rental is cheap. The main runs are floodlit for evening skiing.
Weather and price are the weak points. There are no trees, so strong wind stops the lifts and visibility can disappear entirely. The area is small and the groomed runs are nearly all easy, leaving nothing demanding for a strong skier.
