Igora stands on the Priozersk highway some fifty kilometres from St Petersburg and remains the best-known area in the Leningrad region. The vertical is 120 metres, there are four lifts, and the runs are nearly all easy and wide. The snow is manmade, the slopes are floodlit, and a large complex with hotels, a skating rink and cross-country trails works alongside the resort.

What visitors say about the resort

The praise goes to the standard of preparation: the pistes are well groomed, the lifts run without breakdowns and move people fast, and the lighting allows evening skiing. The resort covers several levels at once, from beginner run-outs to slopes with room to open up. The grounds are called large and tidy, with an ice rink and a zip line beyond the skiing, and the hotel wins points for breakfasts and a heated outdoor pool.

Prices and the commercial approach draw the flak: entry and parking are charged for, lodging, rental and food are expensive, and reviewers joke that you pay for every sneeze. The catering is criticised for taste as well as cost. At weekends and holidays the slopes are overloaded and queues build at the lifts, with waits of up to an hour and a half for the rink; weekdays are far calmer. Rental gear breaks, and mild winters leave the snow thin.
