Sviyazhskie Kholmy stands on the right bank of the Sviyaga some forty kilometres from Kazan. The vertical is small, around 125 metres, there are four lifts and nearly all the runs are easy - the area is built for weekends and for people still learning. Nearby lies the island town of Sviyazhsk: the fortress Ivan the Terrible founded before his march on Kazan, with an Assumption monastery on the World Heritage list.

What visitors say about the resort

The setting gets the compliments: the hills stand high, the Sviyaga river opens up below, and some runs thread between the fir trees. When the snow is in, the slopes are called perfectly decent, with a spread of difficulty that suits people learning to ski. Floodlighting until nine in the evening means weekday and evening sessions are calm and uncrowded. Hotels, cafes and ample parking are on site.

Prices are the first thing criticised: a day here has worked out dearer for many than a day in the Caucasus mountains, and the general verdict is that the cost does not match the level of service. Reviewers complain about queues over holidays and weekends, about grooming, and about a resort that cannot absorb the crowds it attracts. Rental comes in for it too: sizes run out and the gear handed over can be dirty or broken. Staff are often called rude.
