Kukisvumchorr, which everyone in Kirovsk simply calls "the 25th kilometre", lies in the heart of the Khibiny. There are few pistes and the equipment is old, but that is not what brings people: the mountain has long been known as one of the best freeride venues in Russia, and the Freeride Khibiny Open Cup is held here every spring. The snow settles in late November and lasts into mid-May. The slopes are avalanche-prone, and leaving the pistes without reading the conditions is unwise.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the one thing people come here for: freeriding. Several aspects open up from the top station, the descents range from straightforward to genuinely extreme, and the terrain is cut up with natural rolls and couloirs. Reliability counts too - the gorge is sheltered from the northerly wind, and the hill often runs when the town slope in Kirovsk and Bolshoy Vudyavr stay shut. Crowds are absent and prices undercut the neighbouring slopes.
The lifts and the grooming draw criticism. Only worn drag lifts serve the mountain, and the gradient is such that not everyone makes it to the top, snowboarders least of all. Almost nothing under the cable is groomed, so instead of corduroy you get ice and sastrugi. Wind blows nearly all the time and on a bad day riding is impossible. Reviewers also warn about serious avalanche danger off piste. No place for a beginner.
