Marmot Basin lies inside Jasper National Park, twenty kilometres from the town, and has the highest base elevation in the Canadian Rockies - its bottom station stands above the summits of several neighbouring resorts. It is quiet: Jasper is far from any city and queues are rare even in the holidays. There are only seven lifts, but almost half the terrain is marked black, and wide treeless fields open beneath Marmot Peak at 2,612 m. The park surrounds you: elk and bighorn sheep are regular sights on the access road.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the quiet: compared with the Banff resorts it is noticeably emptier, and on a weekday you can have the slopes almost to yourself. Reviewers note that the snow keeps well for days after a fall, helped by cold, altitude and an easterly aspect, and that the walk from car park to lift is shorter than anywhere else in Alberta. Intermediates have terrain to spare.
Snowfall draws the criticism: there is not much of it, around four metres a season on the dry side of the Rockies. The second complaint is cold and wind: the slopes are treeless and some of the lifts are slow and unprotected, so bad weather turns the day into an endurance test.
