Laura Pirovano wins race and globe

On the most important day of her career, Italy's Laura Pirovano overcame her nerves, won the final race and claimed the Small Crystal Globe in downhill. This is the Italian athlete's third consecutive victory in the "queen" discipline, and her first World Cup.

Her main rival, Emma Aicher, who was 28 points behind Laura before the race, finished today's downhill in fifth place and missed the chance to win the "globe".

Laura Pirovano took every possible risk, attacked and almost went off the piste, but ultimately managed to win the race - her third in a row. Before that, Laura sensationally reached the podium in Val di Fassa, winning the downhill on her home piste, and the next day she repeated the feat. Pirovano became the fourth Italian woman in history to win the women's downhill World Cup. In the entire history of alpine skiing, the Small Crystal Globe has been won by Italians Isolde Kostner (two globes), Sofia Goggia (four globes) and Federica Brignone last season.

Two weeks ago, the 28-year-old Italian from Trentino had not reached the podium even once, and today she achieved what seemed impossible.

"It's incredible. I'm overwhelmed with emotion and incredibly happy. I don't know what happened at the start of the season. My skiing was roughly the same, but then the results improved. Today I didn't have the best feeling, and I was afraid to look at my time at the finish, but when I saw the green light, I was very surprised and happy."
