Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in Europe, standing above Granada half an hour from the city, below Mulhacén at 3,481 m, the highest point of mainland Spain. No forest reaches this altitude, so every slope is open, and in clear weather the top stations look out to the Mediterranean and the coast of Morocco. The latitude is offset by height: the base sits at 2,100 m and the season runs into May. The resort has hosted the Alpine World Championships and stages World Cup snowboard and freestyle rounds.
