Silk Road opened on 22 November 2014 in Nanshan park near Ürümqi, in the foothills of the Tien Shan, and is the largest area in Xinjiang. The altitudes are respectable, 1,850 to 2,450 metres, and the dry continental climate stretches the season from November into early May, longer than almost anywhere in China. There are ten lifts and terrain at every level. Ürümqi is about an hour's drive away.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for how modern the operation feels: rental gear is new, the service hall is spacious, and there is a proper restaurant and lounge. Lift capacity is high, including a fast eight-seater gondola, so queues barely form. Winters are dry and sunny, the snow stays light, and the mountain views are a reason visitors come back. Value is generally rated fairly, and the trail mix leans towards beginners and solid intermediates.
The skiing itself does not reach Alpine standards, and that is the main complaint - the choice of runs is narrow, little counts as difficult, and a strong skier is done in a day. Safety comes up too: just past the cable car exit beside the learner slope there is a steep pitch with nothing fencing it off, and novices end up there by accident. Artificial snow is used a lot, and little English is spoken, which complicates renting gear and buying tickets.
