The resort sits at the northern tip of Honshu on the flanks of Mount Iwaki, 1,625 m, whose neat cone has earned it the name "Tsugaru Fuji". Aomori prefecture counts among the snowiest places on earth, and enough falls here that snowmaking is unnecessary; freeriders come for exactly that. The area is small, five lifts, but the park and halfpipe are built seriously and training camps come here regularly. Nearby lies Shirakami-Sanchi, a beech forest on the World Heritage list.

What visitors say about the resort
Powder and the absence of crowds drive the praise. Snow quality is called exceptional, and fresh tracks last all day rather than vanishing within an hour as at Japan's headline resorts, simply because so few people are skiing: there are no queues for the gondola or the chairs. The lift plant is modern for all that - a gondola plus two hooded high-speed quads. The terrain mixes mellow groomed slopes with extensive tree riding and a few steep pitches, and the park and halfpipe are world class.
Volume is the complaint. The area is small, there is no serious alpine exposure inbounds, and after a few days skiers feel capped. The resort also sits well off the beaten track, so nipping over to another mountain for variety is not easy.
