Bláfjöll lies thirty kilometres south of Reykjavík and remains the largest ski area in Iceland. The hill is low, with a little over two hundred metres of vertical, the runs easy to intermediate, and there is no forest at all: only frozen lava and moss. From the Kóngsgil top station the ocean is in view. There are no fixed season dates - they open when there is snow, and much of the skiing is done in the evening under floodlights, since daylight at this latitude lasts only a few hours in winter.

Reviewers value Bláfjöll as Iceland's biggest and most reachable hill: the drive from Reykjavik is short, weekday operation runs late into the evening under lights, and weekends open in the morning. When enough snow falls and the wind leaves it alone, the lifts give easy access to backcountry terrain. Rental gear is on site and usually available without booking ahead.
Wind is the recurring complaint: parts of the area close regularly, and skiing sometimes shrinks to a couple of sheltered slopes. The snow gets blasted into crust, rain can ruin the surface within hours, and some winters deliver very few operating days. Even on a good day the hill feels crowded and the runs are short. Sharp lava lies under the cover, chewing up edges, and rocks can surface even on groomed pistes. Rental and changing rooms are described as bare-bones.
