What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for character: this is a club field run by volunteers with no commercial gloss, and the skiing gets summed up as steep, deep and cheap. The terrain rates among the most demanding patrolled ground in New Zealand, with narrow chutes next to wide powder basins and the best lines reached by hiking the ridge. Price, communal lodge life and the ninety-minute drive from Christchurch all count in its favour.
The criticism, or rather the honest warning, is about how raw it is. Uphill travel is by nutcracker rope tow only, and these are steeper and faster than at neighbouring club fields - the start of the top tow demoralises newcomers. Nothing is groomed, so without fresh snow the slope turns hard, and avalanche risk is part of the routine. Beds are spartan: bunkrooms, shared showers, a generator for a few hours, and guests take on lodge chores. Chains are needed on the road.
