Alta Badia to host a men’s night slalom for the first time on December 21

Альта Бадия впервые примет мужской ночной слалом 21 декабря

The World Cup event in Alta Badia, held in the Italian Dolomites, will have a new schedule this year. On 21 December, the men’s slalom will take place at night for the first time. Until now, the race has been held here during the day.

The legendary competition has been part of the World Cup calendar since 1985. Alta Badia is particularly famous for the technically challenging Gran Risa giant slalom course: its maximum gradient reaches 69%, the average is 36%, and the vertical drop is close to 450 metres.

On 20 and 21 December, the attention of skiing enthusiasts will once again be focused on South Tyrol. The event programme includes the men’s giant slalom on Gran Risa, while on Monday, 21 December, competitors will face a premiere: a night slalom.

Preparations for the unusual event are already under way. Recently, the organising committee held a meeting with FIS representatives, during which specialists inspected the course under artificial lighting. Representatives of the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) and the organisers of the World Cup event also took part in the inspection.

Specifications of the Alta Badia slalom course:

  • start — 1610 m;
  • finish — 1420 m;
  • vertical drop — 190 m;
  • length — 602 m.

The first run of the men’s night slalom will begin at 19:45, with the second at 23:00 Moscow time.

Another men’s World Cup night slalom — the classic event in Madonna di Campiglio — will also take place in December. This year it will be held on 23 December, whereas in the previous two seasons the race took place in early January.
