Oi-Qaragai sits in the spurs of the Zailiysky Alatau about a hundred kilometres from Almaty, in a spruce-filled gorge - hence its second name, "Forest Fairytale". The resort began as a small family base and grew by stages; for the 2025/26 season the Aqtas sector was added with new lifts, noticeably enlarging the skiing, including for stronger skiers. The runs are mostly easy to intermediate and thread through forest, and the Tien Shan snow is dry and settles for the long haul.

Oi-Qaragai is valued for its family-friendly format: gentle slopes, a ski school, cottages and activities beyond skiing. Visitors praise the spruce forest around the pistes and the fact that it is noticeably less crowded than Shymbulak.
Complaints include the small vertical drop, few pistes and lack of challenging skiing. Another drawback is that the journey from Almaty takes more than an hour. Visitors also complain about high-season accommodation prices.
