What the weather at Ruka is usually like

The ski area runs from 291 to 492 m above sea level - a 201 m vertical. In January the daytime average is -8 °C at the base and -9 °C at the summit. Plan for that 1 °C gap: what feels right at the base will be cold up top. The summit sits around -9 °C at the same time of year - at that point the wind matters more than the thermometer.

Average daytime highs at the summit stay below freezing from November through March. Last season brought 85 cm of snow here. The snowiest month was December: 22 cm over 5 days with snowfall. The snowpack was deepest in March, at roughly 56 cm. These are observations from a single season, not a long-term norm: a snowy year here can be twice a lean one.

Snowmaking covers 80% of the runs, so the start of the season barely depends on when natural snow arrives. The season usually runs from 2 October to 2 May.
