The praise is for the terrain: Sugarloaf is the second largest area on the East Coast, with steeps, glades and something nothing else in the region has - open snowfields above the tree line. The cold climate preserves the snow well in midwinter, and the spring skiing is called among the best in America. The mountain stands out of the way, so the slopes stay uncrowded.
Wind draws the criticism: the summit is exposed and the upper lifts are held regularly. The remoteness that keeps the crowds away cuts both ways: the nearest airport and interstate are far off, and western Maine is colder than its rivals. The base facilities, the lodge and the food, are called mediocre.
