What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the scale and for volcanic terrain found nowhere else in the country. This is New Zealand's largest lift-served area, and on a good day reviews turn enthusiastic: varied challenging lines, huge views over Tongariro and almost no competition for fresh snow. Families like Happy Valley, a fully separate learning zone with its own lifts, snowmaking and tubing.
Weather draws the criticism: wind is stronger than on neighbouring Turoa, the upper lifts stop more often, and regulars reckon wind and ice close the mountain around two days a week. The slopes lie above the treeline with no shelter, and in weak seasons the rocky base shows through. Ownership is a story of its own: the former operator Ruapehu Alpine Lifts was liquidated, and since 2025 the field has been run by Whakapapa Holdings under a ten-year concession. The lifts do run.
