Åre is the largest resort in Scandinavia, strung along Lake Åresjön beneath the 1,420-metre Åreskutan. The Alpine World Championships have been held here three times - in 1954, 2007 and 2019 - and the speed courses below the summit remain race-grade. The second sector, Åre Björnen, is the opposite, laid out for families with gentle slopes and children's areas. The latitude gives a long season into May but very short December days, with the compensation of northern lights visible from the piste.
