Idre Fjäll stands in northern Dalarna near the Härjedalen mountains, with slopes radiating from the summit in every direction so you can choose by the wind. The vertical is small, a little over three hundred metres, but there are many runs and nearly three quarters of them are blue: the resort is built entirely around families, with the village set inside the ski area. Snowmaking is near-total, so the season opens in late November. Nearby, at Idre, lives one of Sweden's last Sami reindeer-herding communities.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the resort as a whole rather than just its slopes: cabins and apartments sit so that you ski right up to your door, with horses grazing nearby. Reviewers note the spread of runs from nursery slopes to blacks, the cross-country network and a snow park that keeps freestylers happy, plus a children's area and ski school that put Idre among Sweden's most family-friendly resorts.
The lift system draws criticism. Capacity is too small, and in peak weeks guests say they spend the whole day standing in queues. Reliability is shaky too: one visitor had the gondola out of action four days out of six, and getting to it means climbing a long staircase. Passes are called expensive, strong skiers find the place dull, and boarders complain about all the drag lifts and flat run-outs.
