The Grand Tourmalet ski resort connects Barèges at 1,250 m and La Mongie at 1,800 m, forming one of the largest ski resorts on the French side of the Pyrenees. Col du Tourmalet is located at the centre of the ski resort. The Tour de France made this road in the French Pyrenees famous. The pass is closed in winter, while the pistes run along it. The highlight is the famous Pic du Midi de Bigorre, with its observatory and impressive panoramic views. An aerial tramway ascends in two sections from La Mongie to Pic du Midi at 2,877 m. There are no official pistes leading from Pic du Midi. It is exclusively an off-piste area.

Because of the extensive area between La Mongie at 1,800 m and Barèges at 1,250 m, the ski resort offers plenty of options. There are 70 different pistes in total, most of them running through open terrain. There are forested glades in Ayre Barèges. The centre of the ski resort is Col du Tourmalet, the highest pass in the French Pyrenees, famous from the Tour de France. The pass is closed in winter, while a piste leads to its highest point. The famous Pic du Midi is a particular highlight. It is home to an observatory at 2,877 m. The panoramic view from here is very impressive. An aerial tramway ascends from La Mongie to Pic du Midi at 2,877 m. There are no official pistes from Pic du Midi, but there are unofficial off-piste routes.
