Saint-Lary-Soulan is a rare case of a ski resort that grew out of a spa: thermal baths have operated in the Aure valley since the nineteenth century, and the gondola leaves for the mountain from the middle of the village, up to the Pla d'Adet plateau. Some seven hundred hectares of terrain spread out above, mostly easy and intermediate, with dedicated children's zones. The valley faces south and is sheltered by ridges, so the climate is milder than the French Pyrenees usually manage. The surrounding villages - Vielle-Aure, Azet, Soulan - remain stone-built, with slate roofs and Romanesque churches.

The praise is for the village: Saint-Lary has stayed a living Pyrenean town with narrow streets, shops and good restaurants rather than a purpose-built station. The terrain covers every level, the sector at 1,700 metres is given over to families and beginners, and the new gondolas have cut waiting times noticeably. There are fewer people than in the Alps, and many call the thermal baths in the village a reason to come in themselves.
The pass price draws criticism - it is expensive for the Pyrenees - and especially sharply when that money bought badly groomed slopes, lift breakdowns and long waits. The snow is not always reliable here, and in mild winters part of the area has to close.
