Grandvalira ski resort was created in 2003 by merging two of the oldest ski resorts in the Pyrenees - Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig, founded in 1956, and Soldeu-El Tarter, founded in 1964. This merger made Grandvalira the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees and one of the largest in Europe.

With six sectors covering Encamp, Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa, skiers and snowboarders have an unlimited choice of pistes. Most slopes are easy or intermediate. The ski resort also has numerous black runs, with many designated off-piste areas. Most slopes are above the tree line.

Since Grandvalira ski resort was founded in 2003, substantial investment has been made in its lifts. The resort has many modern high-speed detachable chairlifts, available almost everywhere, although without weather protection. There are also fixed-grip chairlifts and cable lifts. Modern gondolas rise from numerous valley villages, including the 6 km Funicamp. There is also a wind-resistant gondola with two parallel cables rising from Encamp.

What visitors say about the resort

Grandvalira is praised for its size - the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, with more than 200 km of pistes - and its prices: lift passes, accommodation and especially equipment are noticeably cheaper in duty-free Andorra than in France. Its strong ski schools, including Russian-speaking instructors, are also noted.

Criticisms include the wind on exposed sections near Pas de la Casa and the fog, which is not uncommon here. Another issue is queues during Spanish and French school holidays. Visitors also complain about the journey: the nearest airport is three hours away.
