Grandvalira was created in 2003 by merging the two oldest resorts in the Pyrenees - Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig, opened in 1956, and Soldeu-El Tarter from 1964 - with Canillo and Encamp added later. The result is the largest area in the Pyrenees, crossable end to end on a single pass. Pas de la Casa sits against the French border and lives off duty-free shopping; Soldeu is quieter and more family-minded, and has hosted World Cup finals. Heliskiing is legal in Andorra, and Grandvalira is one of the few places in Western Europe where it is openly offered.

Grandvalira is praised for its size - the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, with more than 200 km of pistes - and its prices: lift passes, accommodation and especially equipment are noticeably cheaper in duty-free Andorra than in France. Its strong ski schools, including Russian-speaking instructors, are also noted.

Criticisms include the wind on exposed sections near Pas de la Casa and the fog, which is not uncommon here. Another issue is queues during Spanish and French school holidays. Visitors also complain about the journey: the nearest airport is three hours away.
