Killington is nicknamed the Beast of the East: the largest resort in the eastern United States, spread over six summits of the Green Mountains, with more vertical than anywhere else in New England. The profile leans towards experts - half the trails are black, including Outer Limits, the longest and steepest mogul run in the East. Everything is below the tree line, but glades are marked between the trees and left ungroomed. Heavy snowmaking and cold nights make Killington the first resort in North America to open and the last to close; the women's World Cup comes here at the end of November.

The praise is for the season and the snowmaking: Killington opens earlier and closes later than anywhere else in the eastern United States, usually from late October to May, and its snow guns are called the best in Vermont. Reviewers note the variety: nursery slopes, long blues, and steep runs and glades for strong skiers. The après-ski is among the loudest in New England.
Crowds draw the criticism: the big cities are close, and at weekends and holidays the resort fills up with long lines at the key lifts. The second complaint is ice: once the manmade snow is scraped to the base, the steeps and glades turn unpleasant. The layout confuses people too - six base areas, and moving between them takes time.
