Whiteface hosted the alpine programme of the 1980 Winter Olympics and has the greatest vertical in the eastern United States, close to a kilometre. The mountain itself stands apart, thirteen kilometres from Lake Placid, so the village and the slopes lead separate lives. A third of the terrain is black, the trails are narrow and cut through forest, and the wind off this Adirondack summit and its hard surface long ago earned it the nickname "Iceface". The Cloudsplitter gondola climbs to the subsidiary summit of Little Whiteface, with views over Lake Champlain.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise goes to long, uninterrupted descents of a kind barely available anywhere else in the east. Reviews call the trail mix honest, from true greens to double blacks, with plenty of glades and natural side hits. Snowmaking and grooming equipment is rated top-notch. The summit panorama opens out almost a full three hundred and sixty degrees, and locals and staff are described as friendly.
Ice and wind draw the criticism. The nickname "Ice Face" was earned: cover runs thin and hard, especially in the first months of the season. Wind regularly shuts lifts, the gondola above all, which makes the experience inconsistent, and summit wind chills reach around minus thirty. Several lifts are said to be overdue for replacement. The on-mountain restaurant is called overpriced for the portion size, and there is no lodging on the hill itself.
