La Plagne was built in the late 1960s on the plateau of the same name and is now a dozen villages at different heights, from wooded Montalbert up to Belle Plagne at two thousand metres. Seventy per cent of the terrain sits above two thousand and the top reaches onto the Bellecôte glacier, so snow is rarely a worry. Across the Isère valley runs the Vanoise Express, a double-decker car for two hundred people that joins La Plagne to Les Arcs as the Paradiski. Another local fixture is the 1992 Olympic bobsleigh track at La Roche, which still takes passengers.

Reviews describe La Plagne as a resort for families and keen skiers: together with Les Arcs, it offers more than 400 km of pistes connected by the Vanoise Express aerial tramway. Visitors praise the wide, gentle slopes, which are suitable for learning, and the reliable snow in the upper sectors.
Criticism focuses on the development - the high-rise buildings at 2000 m are described as characterless - and on the resort being split into around ten separate villages. Another frequent issue is queues for the Vanoise Express at peak times and poor skiing in the lower area around Montalbert in warm weather.
