Les Arcs is four villages named for their altitude - Arc 1600, 1800, 1950 and 2000 - plus Peisey-Vallandry in the wooded valley next door. A funicular climbs from Bourg-Saint-Maurice at the bottom, a rare French arrangement that puts you on the mountain straight off the train. The high point, the Aiguille Rouge at 3,226 m, yields a seven-kilometre descent with some two thousand metres of drop. The Vanoise Express links the area to La Plagne; together they form the Paradiski on a shared pass.

Les Arcs is valued for its vertical drop - more than 2 km from Aiguille Rouge to Bourg Saint Maurice - and for its tree skiing, which is unusual for high-altitude France. Together with La Plagne, it offers more than 400 km of skiing on a single lift pass.

Criticisms include the 1600, 1800 and 2000 stations, which were built at different times and are inconveniently linked, so accommodation should be chosen carefully. The other issue is queues for Vanoise Express. Visitors also complain about wind on the exposed upper slopes.
