Mount Bachelor is the near-perfect cone of a dormant stratovolcano in the Oregon Cascades, half an hour from Bend. Its shape governs everything: a dedicated lift reaches the summit, from which you can descend in any direction through a full 360 degrees, choosing your aspect by the wind and the sun. It is the highest lift-served skiing in the Pacific Northwest, and enough snow falls that the season runs into late May without any snowmaking. Forest climbs high on the flanks, but near the top only bleached tree skeletons remain, shaped by volcanic ground and wind.

The praise is for the season and the summit: Bachelor is a dormant volcano, you can drop off its cone in any direction, and the season often stretches six months into late spring. The snow is drier than the Pacific Northwest usually delivers, and the ancient twisted hemlock forests lower down make fine skiing.
Weather draws the criticism: the mountain is exposed, the wind gets up often, and the single summit lift shuts in bad conditions; visibility suffers mid-mountain too. There is no lodging at all on the hill - everyone stays in Bend and drives out.
