The resort sits on the southern flank of Mount Hood around the 1937 lodge, a New Deal building designated a National Historic Landmark and filmed from outside as the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. The skiing drops well below the lodge itself, down towards Summit Pass.

Its defining feature is the Palmer snowfield: the lift to it runs through the summer, and this is the only place in North America with year-round lift-served skiing. Summer freestyle camps come here, and a halfpipe of around seven metres operates. In winter the Bruno's and Pucci runs are floodlit on Friday and Saturday evenings.

What visitors say about the resort

The praise is for something no other North American area offers: lifts turning through the summer, with the Palmer snowfield keeping skiing alive year-round and hosting competition-grade parks that draw summer camps. The 1930s lodge is admired in its own right as a historic landmark with rooms and dining. Reviewers also like the Mount Hood views on clear days, the fast chairs and how well the place works for families.

Winter is where complaints land: Palmer is shut then, and with it most of the challenging terrain, leaving largely gentle cruisers. The Magic Mile chair has no tree cover, and wind or thick fog shut it on roughly four days in ten, while the upper slope scours out firm and icy. In summer the snow turns to slush by midday, a line builds at the bottom, and the ticket costs full price for a couple of working lifts. Signage on the hill is also called inadequate.
