The terrain earns the praise: Thunder Mountain is rated the best serious skiing in Southern California, with genuine black runs, chutes, bumps and small canyons, and the backcountry starts right there. Price is the other draw - the ticket undercuts every major Californian resort. Reviewers like the Notch lodge for food and a beer, and the unpretentious local feel.
Lifts and logistics take the hits. The chairs are ancient slow fixed-grip doubles, chair 4 opens unpredictably, and loading Sugarpine chair 1 is so slow that a crowd builds at the base. Another queue forms at the ticket window, since tickets must be collected in person. Snowmaking amounts to a couple of guns, so reaching the parking lot on skis needs a generous storm. Beginner terrain is scarce, there is no lodging on the hill, runs stay icy until the sun hits, and the approach is a narrow pass with awkward parking.
