Rusutsu lies in western Hokkaido, half an hour from Niseko, with skiing spread over three separate mountains around the village: West, East and Isola. From the Isola summit you can see the Pacific, Lake Toya and the cone of Mount Yotei. The snow is the same as its neighbour's - dry, light and abundant - but there are far fewer people, and the trees between the runs are open to freeriding when conditions allow. At the base stands a large resort hotel, known for the carousel in its lobby and a monorail between its wings.

Rusutsu is praised for snow as good as neighbouring Niseko and for its tree skiing - the birch woodlands here are considered the best in Hokkaido. Visitors note that it is noticeably less crowded, with virtually no lift queues.
It is criticised for its isolation: the resort is essentially one large hotel, with nowhere to go in the evening. The second issue is the prices at that hotel. Another frequent comment is that the three mountains are not perfectly connected, and getting between them takes time.
