Sahoro sits in central Hokkaido, in the Tokachi district, beneath the mountain of the same name. The area is small, but it gets as much snow as its famous neighbours, and a third of the terrain is black - the upper mountain and the north face are left ungroomed, which is what people come for. The beginner zone lies at the bottom by the quad chairs. Two large hotels stand at the slope, one of them a Club Med, and the resort lives mostly off their guests, so the pistes stay uncrowded.

What visitors say about the resort
Sahoro is praised for being empty: the hill is effectively shared by hotel guests only, so chairlift queues are rare. Beginners have it especially good, with plenty of gentle runs, ski-in ski-out access from the building, and group lessons taught in English, which is unusual in Hokkaido. The snow is dry and cold, and the skiing feels calmer than at Japan's headline powder names.
Size and limited facilities are the weak points. There are only three red runs, too little variety for intermediates, and advanced riders exhaust the mountain in a couple of days. The express quad serving the harder terrain does not always run, the top lift reportedly almost never opens, and early in the season only part of the network operates. Meanwhile school groups build a fifteen-minute queue at the gondola while the other chairs run empty. Rental and the hotel shop are called wildly overpriced.
