Thollon-les-Mémises sits on a balcony above Lake Geneva, a quarter of an hour's climb from the spa town of Évian. The view is what draws people: the whole lake is visible from the pistes, the Jura ridge rises beyond it, and on a clear day Mont Blanc opens up to the south.

The skiing itself is calm and family-oriented: of sixteen runs only one is black, the rest are blue and red across open pasture above the treeline. The station has no working website of its own - its former address was taken over and redirects elsewhere, and the Évian tourist office holds the information.

What visitors say about the resort

The praise is for the view and the family format. The panorama over Lake Geneva and the Swiss shore appears in almost every review, and the slopes are described as well suited to children and beginners. Guests like the welcoming staff, the well-groomed pistes and the modest prices, and the new gondola that replaced a worn-out one is rated fast and efficient. Crowds are thin, so the resort is often chosen as a quiet family base.

Size and layout draw the complaints. The area is tiny, the runs are short, and a confident skier covers the lot in a couple of hours. The layout is a specific grievance: after the gondola you have to shuffle across an almost flat stretch to reach a drag lift. The remaining lifts are elderly. Snow is the bigger problem - the resort sits low and visitors regularly report there is not enough of it. Many call the skiing mediocre.
