Tignes and Val d'Isère, long known jointly as the Espace Killy, lie at the head of the Isère valley and are linked into a single area. Part of the terrain is on the Grande Motte glacier, which keeps Tignes open for summer skiing. Val d'Isère staged the men's alpine events of the 1992 Albertville Olympics, and its Face de Bellevarde is still on the World Cup calendar. Almost all the skiing is above the tree line, so visibility goes quickly in bad weather - but the snow holds from late November into May.

Tignes and Val d'Isère are praised for their altitude and long season: the Grande Motte glacier operates almost year-round, while the pistes remain open until May. Visitors highlight the scale - around 300 km - and the freeride terrain, which is a reason to come here in its own right.
The main complaints concern the weather and prices. The exposed high-altitude terrain means skiing can stop completely during a blizzard, while visibility disappears above the treeline. Val d'Isère is described as expensive, and Tignes as unattractive: its 1970s architecture is a frequent criticism. A tip from reviewers is to stay in Val Claret rather than Tignes-le-Lac.
