Tignes / Val d'Isère is linked by lifts and pistes, forming one of the largest ski resorts in France. This winter sports resort was formerly known as Espace Killy. It is located at the upper end of the Isère valley. The ski resort and its slopes are partly situated on glaciers. The Grande Motte glacier in Tignes also attracts skiers in summer. The winter sports resort at the foot of Pointe du Montet (3428 m) and Grande Motte (3656 m) offers runs of all difficulty levels for skiing and snowboarding. It is also considered a freeride paradise. The men's alpine skiing events at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville took place in Val d'Isère. The ski resort also regularly hosts World Cup races.

The Val d'Isère ski resort mainly has modern gondolas and chairlifts. Most chairlifts are high-speed detachable lifts, but almost none have bubbles. Tip: the fast Leissieres chairlift connects 2 valleys and rises to a mountain summit - it is the fastest way to reach the starting point.

What visitors say about the resort

Tignes and Val d'Isère are praised for their altitude and long season: the Grande Motte glacier operates almost year-round, while the pistes remain open until May. Visitors highlight the scale - around 300 km - and the freeride terrain, which is a reason to come here in its own right.

The main complaints concern the weather and prices. The exposed high-altitude terrain means skiing can stop completely during a blizzard, while visibility disappears above the treeline. Val d'Isère is described as expensive, and Tignes as unattractive: its 1970s architecture is a frequent criticism. A tip from reviewers is to stay in Val Claret rather than Tignes-le-Lac.
