Tufandağ was built above the town of Gabala on the southern flank of the Greater Caucasus and opened in 2014. The gondola climbs straight from the edge of town, giving almost 950 metres of vertical - a record for Azerbaijan. The runs are mostly easy, though there are blacks up top. There is no snowmaking, and the area depends entirely on natural snow, which at these latitudes rarely settles before late December. Prices are low, with a day pass around eighteen euros.
