Ski resorts in Caucasus Mountains
The Caucasus is Europe's highest mountain range: Mount Elbrus rises to 5,642 m, higher than any Alpine peak. The mountains are shared by Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, and skiing developed independently in each country, so the resorts differ from one another.
The Russian side is represented by the ski areas around Sochi, above all Rosa Khutor with its Olympic pistes. In Georgia, skiers head to Gudauri on the Georgian Military Highway, known for freeriding and helicopter drop-offs, while in Azerbaijan they ski at Shahdag, built from scratch in the 2010s.
