Via Lattea - the Milky Way - straddles the French-Italian border, linking Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx, San Sicario and Claviere with Montgenèvre in France. Most of the mountain programme of the 2006 Turin Olympics was held here: freestyle and snowboard at Sauze d'Oulx, biathlon at San Sicario, luge and bobsleigh at Cesana, and Sestriere still hosts World Cup races. The landscape changes as you cross it - open treeless slopes above Sestriere, thin larch woods at Sauze d'Oulx, dense fir on the north-facing sides. Montgenèvre on the French side is one of the oldest ski villages in the Alps and noticeably calmer than the Italian sectors.

Visitors praise the size and the variety: Via Lattea ranks among the largest ski areas in Europe, and the tree-lined red runs above Sauze d'Oulx are called some of the best in Italy - long, steep enough and full of options. The off-piste gets particular mention, as does the lift pass being noticeably cheaper than at the French resorts nearby.

Criticism falls first on the lifts: they are dated, there are barely any gondolas, the chairs have no hoods, and queues get serious at weekends and in the holidays. The second recurring complaint is wind, which closes the link between Sestriere and Sauze d'Oulx. Reviewers also mention ice and uneven grooming in mild winters, and a confusing piste map.
