Andermatt sits at the heart of Switzerland where the Gotthard, Furka and Oberalp passes meet, and was long a garrison town - the army kept a base here. That changed in the 2010s when the Egyptian developer Samih Sawiris invested in the resort; in 2018/19 the Schneehüenerstock-Express gondola linked Andermatt over the Oberalp pass to Dieni near Sedrun as a single area. You can also move between sectors on the Matterhorn Gotthard railway, which runs down the valley with skis aboard. Apart from the linked area stands the Gemsstock, a steep mountain with a reputation as one of the best freeride hills in the Alps.

Andermatt is praised for its reliable snow: the valley lies at the intersection of mountain passes and receives more precipitation than almost anywhere else in Switzerland. Visitors highlight Gemsstock - a mountain for confident skiers, with steep descents and freeriding - as well as the village, which was renovated and upgraded.

Criticisms include the two mountains not being fully connected, with some transfers requiring a train. Gemsstock is also closed in bad weather, while the remaining skiing is noticeably easier. Visitors also complain about prices in the resort's new section.
