Engelberg grew up around a Benedictine abbey founded in 1120, and the monastery still works, with a cheese dairy open to visitors. Above the village stands the Titlis, reached in three stages; the last of them, the Rotair, was the world's first revolving cable car - it makes a full turn during the five-minute ride. At the top are an ice grotto cut into the glacier and the Titlis Cliff Walk, the highest suspension bridge in Europe. The descent from the summit to Engelberg adds up to twelve kilometres and two thousand metres of vertical, and the glacier stretches the season from October into May.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the glacier and the freeriding: the Titlis makes the cover dependable, and in a good year the season stretches from October to May. The vertical is around two thousand metres, and Engelberg's off-piste lines, the "Big Five", are on every strong skier's list. The village has its own railway station, and Zurich is ninety minutes away.
Queues draw the criticism: crowds build at the first lift out of the village and at both cable cars above it, a large share of them sightseers without skis heading for the summit view. The second complaint is that the area is broken into separate pockets with little linked skiing, and too little intermediate terrain for the price.
