Beaver Creek opened in 1980 as a deliberately expensive resort, and it shows: escalators carry you to the lifts, the village walkways are heated, and free cookies are handed out at three o'clock. The Birds of Prey downhill is one of the most respected speed courses in America and has twice hosted the World Championships. The skiing spreads over five summits and runs almost entirely through forest, with only a few open bowls up top. Vail is twenty minutes away and the pass covers both.

What visitors say about the resort

Visitors praise the room to move: the main flow turns off at Vail, closer to Denver, so the lift lines here are shorter on a mountain of similar size. Strong skiers rate the steeps and Birds of Prey, which hosts World Cup rounds. Service is held up as an example - fast lifts, well-kept slopes and the free cookies that have become a tradition at the end of the day.

The complaint is price: Beaver Creek ranks among the most expensive resorts in the United States, and everything costs, from the ticket to lunch on the mountain. Some visitors are put off by the conspicuously moneyed atmosphere. Anyone after open terrain above the tree line will find the mountain short: there are no true bowls here.
