Vail was founded in 1962 by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton, veterans of the 10th Mountain Division that had trained nearby at Camp Hale. The village was built from scratch in an alpine idiom and remains one of the most expensive in Colorado. What matters here, though, is not the facades but the Back Bowls - seven treeless cirques behind the ridge, unmarked and ungroomed, which in a good year amount to thousands of open hectares. Beyond them, further still from the village, lies Blue Sky Basin and its gladed skiing.
