Breckenridge grew out of an 1859 gold camp, and its Victorian Main Street survives intact - one of the largest historic districts in Colorado. The altitude is serious: the town sits at 2,926 m and the Imperial Express chair climbs to 3,914 m, the highest lift in North America. Lower down the skiing runs through cut lines in conifer forest; above the tree line it opens into bowls and chutes. The thin air is noticeable from the first day, and acclimatising here is not a formality.

Visitors praise the variety: high alpine bowls, glades, wide groomers and terrain parks reckoned among the best in North America. The town gets separate mention - it grew up around the gold workings, kept its Victorian buildings and lives all year round, so the bars, restaurants and evenings are better than almost anywhere in Colorado.
The complaints start with crowds: Breckenridge is one of the busiest resorts on the continent, people arrive early for parking, and the base of Peak 8 is a crush at weekends. The second is wind and cold up top, which often shuts the upper lifts. The third is altitude: the town sits at 2,900 metres, and the unacclimatised suffer for the first few days.
