Cogne is praised for runs that turn out surprisingly long and fast: north-facing, cut through forest with a respectable vertical, starting gently and then dropping away in earnest. Reviewers say the pistes are groomed daily, queues are virtually unknown and you often share the hill with a handful of people. The village, the Gran Paradiso backdrop, the cross-country tracks and the ski touring all earn warm words.
Size draws the criticism. There are only a few runs, most of them red, the lifts can be counted on one hand, and the common verdict is that a couple of days is excellent while anything longer runs out of material. Beginners find the terrain cramped and strong skiers find nothing genuinely demanding. Snow reliability is weaker than visitors would like and snowmaking does not cover the whole area. It is a resort for active mountain holidays rather than pure skiing.
