The Fichtelberg stands right on the German-Czech border above Oberwiesenthal, the highest town in Germany. The mountain is called the roof of the Ore Mountains: at 1,215 m there is nothing higher in the range on the German side. Germany's oldest cable car, opened in 1924, runs to the top, with a chairlift alongside it. Across the valley, in plain sight, lies Czech Klínovec, and the pass covers both. Oberwiesenthal has produced a long line of Olympians, among them the ski jumper Jens Weissflog.

Value for money and easy access earn the warmest words: a day trip from Leipzig or Dresden is genuinely feasible. Parents like that the area is compact and easy to oversee - a child can be let loose on the slopes without getting lost. Reviews regularly mention friendly staff, a large and competent ski school, and neatly groomed pistes on good days.
Queues are the main grievance: during school holidays the cable car and the chairlift build long lines, and weekends feel cramped at the base, though the crowd thins out on the runs. Snow is mostly machine-made, so the surface can be harder than natural cover. Some guests describe visible neglect - a drag lift shut for long stretches, several lifts not running, careless grooming. Thin signage and a children's area open only to paid course participants also draw fire.
