Folgaria and Fiorentini lie on the Alpe Cimbra plateau in Trentino, where the runs alternate between spruce forest and open mountain terraces. The place has history: the Austro-Italian border ran along these ridges, and the First World War left a line of forts, now linked by the Skitour dei Forti ski route that connects the sectors. The vertical is modest and the pistes almost all easy to intermediate, but snowmaking covers a hundred per cent and the season holds steady. The plateau still remembers Cimbrian, a Germanic dialect brought here by medieval settlers.

The praise is for the snowmaking: the system here is among the most powerful in Italy and can cover every main run in three days, so the surface is usually dependable even in mild winters. The lifts are modern, the pistes carefully marked, the nursery meadows good, and the pass among the cheapest in Trentino.

The lack of difficulty draws criticism: there are two or three blacks and nothing for strong skiers. Reviewers occasionally complain about the state of individual slopes. Folgaria itself sits away from the lifts and needs a shuttle bus.
