Madonna di Campiglio became a resort in the mid-nineteenth century, long before lifts: Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth holidayed here, and the Habsburg era is still played out in a winter carnival. The village lies in a saddle between the Brenta and Adamello massifs, and the view of the Brenta's rock towers is half the experience. The Spinale Direttissima, nicknamed Schumacher's Streif, hosts the 3Tre World Cup night slalom. Folgàrida and Marilleva on the Val di Sole side were built in the 1960s and are linked to Campiglio by lift.
