Formigal spreads across four adjoining valleys of the Aragonese Pyrenees - Tres Hombres, Izas-Sarrios, Anayet and Portalet - and you can only move between them on skis or by lift. The top of the area stands at the Portalet pass on the French border. The vertical is modest and the slopes mostly wide and open, without trees, but the Portalet sector holds genuinely steep couloirs and marked freeride zones. The pass also covers Panticosa in the next valley, served by a free shuttle.

Formigal is praised for its size - the largest ski area in the Spanish Pyrenees, with around 150 km of pistes - and for prices that are noticeably lower than on the French side. Visitors highlight the wide open slopes and strong snowpark.
The main complaints concern the weather and wind: the ski area lies above the tree line, so visibility disappears in bad weather and the lifts are closed. The village is also described as unremarkable, with little evening life. Visitors also complain about crowded car parks at weekends.
