Candanchú is the oldest ski resort in Spain, opened in 1928 by the Somport pass, the route from Aragón into France since Roman times. The border is a couple of kilometres away, and the old road over the pass carried pilgrims towards Santiago. The runs fill a bowl around the village, with an unusually high share of difficult terrain for the Pyrenees - close to a third. Neighbouring Astún, a kilometre away, is sold on a joint pass.

Candanchu is praised for its character: it has a reputation as one of Spain's toughest resorts, with a long list of reds and blacks that demand control and deliver adrenaline. The views and the large beginner area both get credit, and the pass also covers neighbouring Astun, whose wider, sweeping pistes add variety. Reviewers repeatedly mention helpful staff and sensibly arranged services that make a day here comfortable.
The lift fleet is what gets torn apart. All six chairlifts are fixed-grip and slow, and one reviewer calls the system among the most antiquated ever used, saying it ruins an attractive resort with good snow. The facilities look dated, queues build at the chairs, some drags stay closed, and the cafeteria has nowhere near enough seating. Intermediates are routinely pointed towards Astun instead, where the lifts are newer.
