Astún sits in a high Pyrenean bowl by the Somport pass, a couple of kilometres from the French border and right beside neighbouring Candanchú, with which it shares a lift pass. The resort was built from scratch in 1976: there was no village here before, only pasture, and everything stands directly at the lifts. The runs are entirely above the tree line on open slopes, and navigating them in a whiteout is hard work. On the other hand this corner of the Aragonese Pyrenees gets more snow than areas further south, and it lasts.

Snow earns Astun its praise: thanks to a north-north-westerly aspect it holds cover better than most Spanish resorts, with depths around eighty centimetres through the heart of the season. The terrain is more varied than at its neighbours: nine black runs keep stronger skiers busy, La Raca rated the toughest. Grooming is taken seriously, and the views across the north faces of Pico Aspe and down onto Canfranc station get their own mentions.
What draws criticism is the sense of an under-invested station, with reviews speaking plainly of neglect. The one concrete recurring complaint is rocks: on the open slopes there are plenty of them, even in the middle of the piste, and constantly dodging the big ones is described as dangerous rather than merely annoying. The restaurant area inside the pyramid building is reported as noticeably run down.
