Glencoe is Scotland's oldest ski resort: the first lifts went up here in 1956. It stands above Glen Coe, one of the most recognisable glens in the Highlands, with Rannoch Moor and Buachaille Etive Mòr in view from the runs. The terrain is varied, with nearly a third of the kilometres black, and the snow is natural only - there is no snowmaking. The glen is known for more than skiing: the massacre of 1692 is still remembered in Scotland.

The praise is for the terrain: reviewers agree this is the best skiing in Scotland both on and off piste, and that the longest and steepest groomed runs in Britain are here. It is described as a mountain for confident skiers and riders who enjoy a raw, unpackaged hill, with genuinely good powder days. The drive from Glasgow, a little over an hour, counts in its favour, and the staff get warm words.
Ageing lifts and queues draw criticism: lift-pass lines run to three quarters of an hour at peak times, and one visitor sat in the rental queue from nine in the morning until almost noon. Signage is the other weak spot - few markers and so many snow fences that piste edges are unreadable, which in typical Scottish murk leaves you guessing where you are. Rocks and ice, closures from wind and rime, thin beginner terrain and a £30 day pass that feels steep for short runs all come up.
